Getting Past the Velvet Ropes

Anyone who has been denied entry to a nightclub can tell you that it is a
frustrating and infuriating experience.   Velvet List, as a company,
endeavors to prevent this unpleasant experience from happening to our party
goers.  We provide each of our clients with a guest list, and we have a
representative at each nightclub for which we produce events, to greet
clients and help them through the enchanted Velvet Ropes.  However, there
are dress codes and other factors going beyond just being on the guest list
that can unfortunately ruin your night.  Below is a list we have complied
that will get you past even the most boorish door men, and into NYCs most
exclusive venues.

·         Dress Code:  Dress Codes can vary from club to club but there are
some standards that can be applied across the board.  Remember what one club
allows another may not.  If you plan on club hopping you should try to dress
in a manner that will allow you in anywhere.  Basic rules to follow are:

-  No Shorts For Gentlemen (even dressy ones).

-   No Boots (this includes Timberlands, ACGs, and Uggs).

-  No Hats.  This rule is becoming more enforced, to the point where many
clubs will not even allow you to coat check your hat so to be on the safe
side we recommend doing your hair and leaving the hat at home.

-  No Flip Flops, or flat open sandals.  For the most part this is a safety
issue because so much of the foot is exposed.  Ladies it’s always best to
wear heels and bring flats if your feet hurt after a night of dancing.

-  No t-shirts.  Gentlemen should always wear a collared shirt, at least a
Polo if not a button down, but the more exclusive and high end clubs will
require a button down shirt.

-  Sneakers.  Sneakers are becoming more accepted in the NYC club scene.  We
tell our clients to wear black sneakers as they are much more acceptable
that white or multi colored sneakers.  However the very high end clubs still
require hard bottom shoes for gentlemen.  Also please remember that if a
clubs dress code is no sneakers that means no sneakers, even if they are
Prada, Gucci, Luis Vuitton, or so on.   Ladies should not wear sneakers.

-  Jeans.  Jeans are ok as long as they are dressed up with a button down
shirt for gentlemen or a blouse for ladies.  Also they should fit neatly and
not be baggy.

·         Id.  NYC clubs with the exception of Webster Hall are 21+.
Webster Hall is 19+.  Proper Id is required.  What is proper id?  Today
clubs want a state issued id that can be scanned.  This id needs to be valid
and not expired.  Passports are also acceptable provided that they are not
expired.  Copies of birth certificates, school ids, and benefit cards are
not acceptable id.  Also be warned if you try to use someone else’s id,
security will confiscate the id.

·         Intoxication. A person can be denied entry to any night club if
they appear intoxicated while trying to enter.  If you plan on drinking
before arriving to the club, be sure to not let it get out of hand.  This is
an especially useful tip we give to clients arriving in party buses and
limos.  The free liquor is tempting but drink too much and the rest of your
night can be ruined.

·         Behavior.  It can be annoying to stand in line or show id etc.
while trying to get into a night club, but be warned that if you have bad
attitude or act aggressively outside the club, you will be denied entry.
Security will see this as an indicator of how your behavior will be inside
the club, deem you a trouble maker and seal the velvet ropes with you on the
outside.

·         Large Groups of Gentlemen.  Gentlemen, unfortunately if you are
traveling in a group be prepared for issues at the door.  If possible
gentlemen should always couple up with ladies, or break down into very small
groups, though that doesn’t always work.  If you are coming out with a group
of gentlemen, your best bet is to be prepared to do bottle service, which
isn’t a bad deal.  You can split the cost, you get super VIP service, you
don’t wait in line, and you have your own table and personal waitress for
the night.

·         Guest List – Be sure to remember to mention Velvet List at the
door of our events.  Most clubs require you be on a guest list for entry.

These are our tips to try to make your night as fabulous and hassle free as
possible!

Cheers,
The Velvet List Team
